In 1817 stones and rocks were piled into the water to create a “waterfall” in the slow-flowing little River Itz, the sound of which could be heard up above on the palace terrace and was intended to create a romantic atmosphere. A little further upriver the Itz was dammed up by stones to form a small pond. Only rudimentary remains of the romantic resting place and the waterfall have been preserved.
